Masks

Please Hear What I Am Not Saying
By Charles C. Finn

Don't be fooled by me.
Don't be fooled by this mask that I wear.
For I wear a thousand masks and none of them are really me.
Masks that I'm too afraid to take off, fearing that you'll get to know me.
Pretending is an art that is second nature to me.
I'm pretending that I am in command and that I need no one.
That I'm cool and that my surface is so smooth and I cannot be shaken by anything.
I act as if I am in control, but please don't for one moment be fooled by my surface, that's only
my mask.
Beneath this mask lies no smugness, no complacence.
Beneath this mask dwells the real me in confusion, loneliness, and fear.
But I don't dare tell you that.
I don't dare tell you that this is my mask.
I'm frightened by all the possibilities of my weaknesses being exposed.

I think about it all the time. Will I look like a fool?
That's why I work frantically to create this mask to hide behind in my relationship with people.
This nonchalant, sophisticated facade helps me pretend and shields me from the glance that knows
me.
But such a glance is precisely my only salvation.
It's my only salvation if, however, the glance is followed by  acceptance and love.
It's the only thing that can liberate me from myself, from my own self-built prison...from the
barriers that I have so  painstakingly created.
It is only that glance that will assure me of what I cannot assure in myself and, that is, that I
am really worth something.

But I don't tell you this. I don't dare to. I'm afraid to.  I'm afraid that your glance will not be
followed by acceptance and love.
I'm afraid that you'll think less of me...that you'll laugh and that your laugh would kill me.
I'm afraid that deep-down I am nothing. That I'm just no good and soon you're going to find out and
you'll no longer love me...that you'll reject me.
So I play my game. My desperate, pretending game with the facades of assurance from without and
that of a trembling little child from within.
And my life becomes a front.
And I idly chatter to you in suave tones about anything that really means nothing.
And yet I can never tell about the crying inside of me...of my greatest hurts...of my deepest
fears...my concerns.
I can't tell you that because I am afraid.
So please listen carefully not to what I am saying, but to what I am not saying.
To what I'd like to be able to say. And for what my very own survival I need to say.
I dislike this hiding...honestly.
I dislike this phony, superficial game I'm playing.
I really would like to be genuine and spontaneous and me. But you've got to help me.
You've got to hold out your hand.
You've got to hold out your hand even when it appears to you that it's the last thing I want from
you, because I am going to share a secret with you about myself;
the moment I act like I need you the least is the moment I need you the most. The moment I act like
I need you the least is the moment I need you the most.
Don't be fooled by this mask. When you see anger in this mask, don't be fooled for one
second...that's not anger, that's hurt.
The mask of anger is easier to show than the mask of hurt.
And if we make the error of looking at people's masks only to see anger on their face, we may end
up in a confrontation only because we missed the point.

You have the power to wipe away this blank stare of the "breathing dead" beneath this mask. It will
not be easy for you.
Long felt hurts make my masks endure. The nearer you approach me the harder I may strike back.
Irrationally, I fight against the very thing that I cry out for - my identity.
You may wonder who I am. You shouldn't.
Don't be fooled by the face I wear.
I am someone you know very well.
I am every man and woman and child you meet.

After reading the poem, write a 3 - 5 sentence paragraph in which you explain 1) how the poem relates to the pieces of literature we have read this six weeks, 2) the overall message or theme of the poem, and 3) how the poem personally relates to you.  YOU MUST INCLUDE SOME TYPE OF EVIDENCE FROM THE POEM IN YOUR RESPONSE.

  1. I believe this poem is saying that words we use are often not the words that shows what we want people to take away from the conversation.
We show what people want to see, we converse with them easily but the things we say are superficial. We want to hide all our flaws and burdens. We're hiding in fake smiles and false happiness,"
For I wear a thousand masks and none of them are really me.
Masks that I'm too afraid to take off, fearing that you'll get to know me.
Pretending is an art that is second nature to me.''
This poem dosen't relate to me very much at all. I show the real me all the time. Of course they're are personal things I go through and have that I don't want to reveal.

    2. This poem is related to Minister Veil because he wore the veil over his face hiding his emotions. He has been his normal self smiling and greeting the congregation. He soon appeared to be sad under the veil. In this story the veil is the mask.

  2. This poem is about how your attitude can change what people think of you. Even when you need them the most your attitude can make the portray something totally different. This poem "please hear what I am not saying" is very similar to Paul l. Dunbar's "we wear the mask". Both poems talk about how people hide their emotions, but deep down inside the have a raging fire inside of them of how they truly feel. They want help but don't try to help themselves.

  3. The poem relates to the literatures ,because they all talk about feelings and how someone is hiding there true feelings to someone or against someone. The overal message of this whole entire poem is, that people in the world has there flaws and problems and doesn't want anyone interfiring. In life people deals with situations that are unbelievable to people who don't understand the circumstances they go through everyday so they put on these different types of emotions (masks) so no one can figure out the real them so don't be fool when people just out of the ordinary acts an different way. Well this poem relates to me because I do go through things outside school and I hide my true emotions and acts like nothing has happen.

  4. I believe what the poem is saying that sometimes we had are feelings or expressions to people because we are afraid to be judge by people . We want people to accept us with love and acceptance but never seems to happen so therefore we hide are feelings and the way we act around people . I think this poem relates too The minister's black veil because he was slightly different people didn't accept him and they didn't give him the same kind of love as they did before ."I'm afraid that your glance will not be
    followed by acceptance and love.
I'm afraid that you'll think less of me...that you'll laugh and that your laugh would kill me." I think i relate to this poem because there are some days where i do get angry or upset but i still hide my emotions by just putting on a smile , other than that i really can't relate .

  5. This poem relates to the other stories by stating that we put on a different face and feelings for other people. All the stories say we have a sense of putting away and hiding our pain by setting up a fake smile and acting like nothing troubles us. Even if the pain consumes one in which we need help, we will still not ask for it so we don't seem weak. The theme of this poem is saying we hide behind a mask by hiding how we really feel just to fit and won't seem as a weakling. I can relate to this poem by saying that even I have put on a mask to hide what I really feel. I like to feel secluded from sharing what I really feel. I also do this to keep my weaknesses for only I to know.

  6. I think the overall message of the poem is that everyone will wear a mask to cover up who they really are . Some people might be afraid to show their real faces because their peers might judge them. I can kind if relate to the poem because I will wear a mask to hide my emotions on how I'm really feeling about something, to make it seem like nothing's wrong or bothering me. The poem relates to "We Wear The Mask" because in the poem it states , "don't be fooled by me. Don't be fooled by this mask that I wear... None of them are really me. Mask that I'm too afraid to take off".

  7. This poem refers towards our action which we could be scare to be judge by people. Everybody wants people to accept how we feel towards everybody else, therefore we hide our feelings and way of acting around people. We hide our face with a mask which we could have a different emotion than anybody else. In the poem is saying we put a mask where we hide how we really feel where we don't seem like a weak person. What i can really tell towards this poem which we can inferred if we put a mask to hide our feeling and pain having a emotion and way of act like nothing wrong happened to us.

  8. This poem relates to the literature we read because it explains their feelings and how someone hides their feelings. In the minister's black veil it talks about Mr.Hooper with a black veil covering his eye. The poems overall message is wearing a mask can hide your feelings from others. In the poem it says "Mask's that I'm too afraid to take off, fearing that you'll get to know me".Wearing a mask makes you become into someone you wish to become because you can't show the people the real you. The poem personally relates to me by I wearing a mask representing who I want to be. I can relate to this "That I'm cool and that my surface ls so smooth and I cannot be shaken by anything. I act as if I am in control, but please don't for one moment be fooled by my surface, that's only my mask".

  9. This poem relates to "Minister's Black Veil," because the story and the poem is both about how people hide who they really are to please other people. That people are afraid of people not accepting them for who they really is. The theme of this poem, is that people are afraid to reveal the person they really are. This poem reminds me of the person I used to be. I was the girl who wanted everyone to like me and I wanted to change myself so I can be the person that would be accepted.

  10. This poem relates to the literature of "We wear the mask" ,because they both obviously talk about people who wear a mask and don't express how they truly are feeling. "Don't be fooled by this mask that i wear. Masks that I'm To afraid to take off, fearing that you'll get to know me". This quote shows how the person is just too scared to take their mask off and not show who they truly are. The overall message from this poem is you will never know the true feelings of a person when they hide behind that mask they wear. The person who wears that mask can easily fool you. This poem personally relates to me, because I wear a mask as well, I don't show how I am truly feeling when I have a problem. I act as if nothing's wrong and put a fake smile on my face that is my mask."I act as if I am in control, but please don't for one moment be fooled by my surface, that's only my mask". People believe in the mask i have on.

  11. This poem relates to the Minister's Veil because they both show how people attempt to hide their true emotions from the rest of the world. The message is that you shouldn't hide your feelings. Your emotions affect the people around you. When the author writes your "...laughing would kill me" she is afraid to show her embarrassing emotions. This relates to me because once I used to try and hide who I really was by acting funny in front of others and doing things I would not normally do.

    2. This poem relates to the Minister's Veil because they both show how people try to hide their true feelings from the rest of the world. The passage is that you shouldn't shade your feelings. Your actions affect the people you hang around . When the author writes your "laughing would kill me" she is afraid to show her embarrassing emotions. This relates to me because I tried to hide who I really was by dressing differently just not being myself and doing things I wouldn't do.

  12. This poem relates to the "Minister's Veil" and the "We wear the mask cause they all show how they hide their feelings and their emotions/feelings from others. This quote "The mask of angeris easier to show then the mask of hurt" shows how this person is afriad to show the hurt and sad of their life and just show the fake happy and proud side of thier life. But the overall of this poem is that you will never know the true side of a person when thhey hiding behide their mask and how you shouldn't have to hide your feelings because you might have friends thats going through the same thing as you. When they say "I dislike this hiding ...honestly" relates to me because i never like to hide becausei like to also have a happy feeling when ever im doing anything no matter what im never hiding i keep a positive attitude going forward.

  13. The Poem "We Wear A Mask" relates to Ministers Veil because they both show how people wear a mask and hide their true feelings and emotions. "Don't be fooled by the mask I wear, I act as if I am control, but please don't for one moment be fooled by my surface, that's only my mask“. This quote shows how the author is hiding a lot with the mask he wears. I can personally relate to this poem because when I have problems or something is bothering I hide it all without showing my emotions. I don't show any feelings, I put a smile on my face as if it was the mask.

  14. The poem "Please hear what I am not saying" by Charles C. Finn relates to "we wear a mask " because it express how we wear a symbolic mask that hides out emotions. The quote from "Please Hear What I am Saying", "Don't be fooled by this mask that I wear. For I wear a thousand masks and none of them are really me." , describes that the central message of this poem is that we hide our real emotions for various reasons. We hide them to protect ourselves or to just no show emotion at all to weaken our image. This poem relates to me because I am capable of hiding my emotions from someone so they won't have the ability to hurt me.

  15. This peom relates to the "Minister's Veil" by them telling how a person hides their feelings and emotions when there're around others. The quote "this mask dwells the real me in confusion, loneliness, and fear." shows the similarities on how Mr. Hooper felt in the poem "Minister's Veil". This poem is about how people change their personalities when they be around others, because their scared of what a person would say about them if they be their self. This peom doesn't relates to me that much, but I've been around people like that before. I believe everyone has something that they don't want to share with others including me.

  16. This relates to the literature (Minister with Black Vell) we read because it talks about how people try to hide their emotion/feelings by covering their face. The theme is that there is people that dont show their true emotionon and to hide how they really feel.In this poem says "Beneath this mask dwells the rea.l me in confusion loneliness and fear" which concludes that people hide their feelings by wearing a mask. This relates to me because a few years ago we start school and we sat in groups and i didint fit in and try fittingin with them by smiling and agreeing with alot of things that i didn't ike.

  17. This poem relates to the "Minister's Veil" because in both stories the main character's were hiding behind a mask. "Beneath this mask dwells the real me in confusion, loneliness, and fear.
But I don't dare tell you that. I don't dare tell you that this is my mask".The theme of this poem, is that people are afraid to be themselves because of how people may judge them."But I don't tell you this. I don't dare to. I'm afraid to. I'm afraid that your glance will not be followed by acceptance and love." This relates to me because i too hide behind a mask around certain people. Its either to seem cool, popular or just something i am not.

  18. This poem relates to the Minister's Black Veil because both story's show how people hide their feelings or emotions from the world. The message is that you shouldn't hide your feelings or emotions from the people you are around with, it may affect them. When the author says"Don't be fooled by this mask that i wear. Masks that I'm To afraid to take off, fearing that you'll get to know me", it means that the person is scared to take off the mask and show how in reality they are. This relates to me because i may be around my friends and i may act like if im happy but sometimes im not.

  20. The poem relates to "Minister's Black Veil" because both poems talks about a symbolic mask that hide our true feelings. The overall message of both poems is that many people has things they doesn't want others to know so we hide our trueselves by wearing a mask which is very sad that in the human nature we change for others. In th poem it says "I don't dare tell you this is my mask". This quote relate to me because I hide things I don't want others to know about so I show another side of me to stay positive.

  21. This was an extremely long , yet very meaningful poem. "We wear the mask" is very well related to this because people hide who the are to be accepted. The quote "I'm frightened by all the possibilities of my weakness being exposed" connects to my life with so much power. Everyone has changed who they are to fit in and later realized that they stepped out of character and left who they really are behind baby

  22. This poem is similar to "We wear the mask" because both poems are talking about how they can't express the feelings cause the dont think they have the feelings to take the feed back. "But I don't tell you this. I don't dare to. I'm afraid to. I'm afraid that your glance will not be
    followed by acceptance and love.
I'm afraid that you'll think less of me...that you'll laugh and that your laugh would kill me.
I'm afraid that deep-down I am nothing. That I'm just no good and soon you're going to find out and
you'll no longer love me...that you'll reject me". This part of the poem shows they have so much trust issues that they do think any one will accept them but them hiding the true feelings dont really help there situation. The need people to vent to but so scared of them selves they dont think others will accept the or love them. But if the got the people that care for them they will understand and that person will see that no one is perfect. This poem. Relates to me because my girlfriend treat me the same way cant never get her to just tell me when asked. She wait until she get home to tell me but in the end love is something that given to people you accept and appreciate them for trying to communicate cause in the end every need that one person they can come to.

  23. I think this poem is talking about a person who was obviously afraid to be themselves in front of a certain crowd of people because they're afraid on how the people may react who they really are. The quote "Beneth the mask dwells the real me. Confution, loneiness and fear. But I dont dare tell you that. I dont dare tell you Its my mask. Im to frightened by all the possiblities of my weeknesses being exposed." HE CRAZY Mrs.E ! But also kinda wants them to know don't be fooled by the way I'm acting because I'm a completely different person when I'm not around you "Dont be fooled by me. Dont be fooled my the mask I wear."

  24. This poem relates to a piece of literature of " We wear the mask", because in the poem they are stating reasons why they wear the masks and how they are afraid of how people view them. "Mask that I'm too afraid to take off, fearing that you'll get to know me." This quote is saying that they are afraid that they would be judged for who they are. The message of the poem is , be yourself and don't be afraid of who you are. You should be yourself. The poem relates to me because when I was younger I stayed to my and I always tried to fit in. Now that I'm a cheerleader it made me more confident in myself.

  25. This poem relates to TMBV we read this 6 weeks. In TMBV the minister was wearing a veil on his face to cover up secret sin. In the poem they're saying they pretend to be someone else, they're scared to show people who they really are. This poem relates to everyone because sometimes people act different when certain people are around

  26. This poem relates to "The Minister's Black Veil" and "We Wear the Mask" because they both show how people hide their true feelings and emotions. The story "TMBV", The minister is wearing a veil to hide his secret sin. But the congregation thinks he is hiding a shameful sin or he has gone mad. But Mr.Hooper the parson, does not acknowledge his own strange appearance nor his shocked congregation. This poem also relates to "We Wear the Mask" because in this poem the poet talks about how African Americans were treated in the South but they still wore a smile on their faces. "We wear the mask that grins and lies,
It hides our cheeks and shades our eyes" as said in this quote. The message of this poem is to be yourself, don't hide your inner self and emotions. In this poem the poet says "And yet I can never tell about the crying inside of me...of my greatest hurts...of my deepest
fears...my concerns." this relates to me, because I never show my true feelings. If I am hurt, no one will ever know. I guess you could say I wear a mask, also.

  29. The poem is relating to " The Minister's Black Veil" saying how we are as human beings trying to hide our emotions and secrets by being someone else. Overall message in the poem is that people hide their emotions because of how society is. By hiding behind a mask people will think you're okay, but in reality you're not. The quote "But I don't tell you this. I don't dare to. I'm afraid to. I'm afraid that your glance will not be followed by acceptance and love," is saying if he/she show their emotions or secrets they'll be rejected or hated. 30. This poem relates to the literature we have been reading really good, because in "The minister's black veil" the minister is covering his face throughout the whole story. In this poem I understood that this person wears masks that covers up her face and gives a deceiving look throughout their life. In the first sentence of the first stanza she said " Don't be fooled by me. Don't be fooled by this mask that I wear. For I wear a thousand masks and none of them is me." The theme of this poem is to let everyone know that they aren't the only ones who wear masks to try to cover up who they really are. Lots of people use masks because they are afraid of letting everyone know some thing about them, they feel like if someone finds out they won't like them or accepted them for who they are, wich is why lots of people act different in different situations. I can relate to thus poem because there was a certain part in my life that I was afraid to show who I was so I would act different around different people, but now I just stopped caring of what other people thought about me and became the person I am today.

" The person who wears that mask can easily fool you."People might look happy but they are not really they are dying of sadness or anger from inside. This relates to me because i always were a mask. I were a mask that hides my true feelings with a smile in my face every day even in the worst days.

  33. The poem above relates to "The Minister's Veil" in the way that both parties have something very deep to hide, for example, their true emotions from themselves and close friends. The message from the poem above is basically saying that one has to wear a invisible mask cloaked as emotions that are played off to cover the real genuine emotions that are deep inside of one. " I'm afraid that you'll think less of me... " The author is afraid of being looked down upon, being judged, yet, still bothered that he can not be him, the real him ! I can relate to this poem in the manner that one can not be himself without being judged. Maybe I want to stand out ? But how can i with all the negativity around?...

  34. This poem relates to ''We wear the mask'' and ''Minister's black veil'' because they are telling how and what people are feeling on the inside but don't show it.''I'm pretending that I am in command and that I need no one.''and ''That I'm cool and that my surface is so smooth and I cannot be shaken by anything.'' Gives meaning to what people really feel verses how they act when in public for them wearing a mask is easy at time's but also can be hard. The message given out is that showing your feelings could be good cause lift some weight off you shoulder's but wouldn't know how people will react to it also knowing your feeling's you didn't who you were at first and still don't know as you try to find your identity. Myself personal I do have problem's being who I am keeping them inside is how it's better for me because no one needs to know what is going on with me so wearing a smile, laughing, being goofy is my way of coping with them feeling's ''For I wear a thousand masks and none of them are really me.''

  35. This poem relates to the reading we read in class called " We wear the mask" because we use a "mask" to hide our identity. For example, in the quote "Don't be fooled by this mask that I wear.
For I wear a thousand masks and none of them are really me." This quote tells us we have a mask for each setting , or what surrounds us such as the people around you. We don't actually act show our true selves. We only hide behind that mask , afraid of coming out. I can relate to this poem because I wear a mask myself , but not due to fear. I wear a mask hiding the person I think I am. When truly I'm still trying to figure myself out.

Under their masks they hide the feelings that will make them seem weak infront of others. Both mask from the outside show the opposite of what they feel. The author wants you to understand that the mask people wear doesn't match their true identity. It personally relates to me because when it states "I'm pretending that I am in command and that I need no one." I'm afraid to show that I need someone in my life and for them to take advantage of it when they know that if I loose them I will suffer.

The overall message of the poem is that many people hide their emotions and feelings and pretend everything is okay so people won't judge them for what they feel. " the nearer you approach the harder I may strike". This poem used to relate to me when I wanted to be accepted and not be judged for what I really was but later found out no matter what it did they will always judge.

  41. This poem relates to the Ministers Veil because both of these explains how someone can i hide their feelings with masks because their afraid of not being accepted or loved for who they truly are. The message of the poem is we can hide our emotions or feelings because we are frightened of peoples sayings or thoughts..
When it says "I'm pretending that i am in command and i need no one... That i am cool and my surface is so smooth and i can not be shaken by anything." I can relate to this because I would not show that i needed someone by my side that i can be on my own and that i am alright.

  42. I can somewhat relate because, I would act exceedingly different at school to avoid judgment and gossip just to "blend in" or "be in the crowd".

  43. The poem has a relation to the literature of "we wear the mask" , mainly because of the people who wear a mask & don't show their true feelings. In the first stanza Finn says "Don't be fooled by this mask that I wear . Mask that I'm too afraid to take off , fearing that you'll get to know me." This proves that people are hiding not only themselves but their true feelings as well. I interpret the message/tone to be something along the lines of "true feelings aren't shown in fake people." Me personally, I'd rather people not wear "masks" because that's why it's hard for others to trust. In order to build anything you absolutely need trust.

  48. The poem really relates to "We Wear The Mask" in which it portrays the idea that people hide behind a mask where they can just hide who they are and how they feel. The main idea is the way we all hide behind these masks that we create to hide something that we really don't want anyone to know. For Example, when the poem states "beneath this mask lies no smugness, no complacence. Beneath this mask dwells the real me in confusion, loneliness, and fear." it's explaining the reasons for hiding beneath the mask and that people will hide because they are afraid of who they are. This poem doesn't really relate to me because i'am more of a person that wont hide my true self , but rather just be myself around anyone and everyone.

  49. The poem "Please Here What I Am Not Saying" relates to "The Minister's Black Veil" whereas they both reflect upon the idea of hiding ones true self behind a mask that keeps them from being themselves. This poem presents a message that further explains that we ourselves create this mask that covers up our true feelings, our true ways that we hide because we're afraid of the reactions , the judgements that would come our way. In the poem it states "The moment I act like
I need you the least is the moment I need you the most.
Don't be fooled by this mask. When you see anger in this mask, don't be fooled for one second...that's not anger, that's hurt.", this really relates to me because I try not to let many people know that i need them at some point , but in reality all I want is their help. I let the "hurt" overcome me with anger but not intentionally only because i don't have anyone to help me with this anger , this hurt.

  50. This poem relates to "We wear the mask" Because they both talk about how people hide their true feeling from other " Don't be fooled by this mask that I wear.
For I wear a thousand masks and none of them are really me Masks that I'm too afraid to take off," & "I'm afraid that you'll think less of me...that you'll laugh and that your laugh would kill me."
his saying that his to afraid to show their true feeling to others and they put up a mask for others to see pretending to be happy when they aren't, the message from the story its that people hide their feelings from others because they are scare of being judge and made fun of by other.
This poem relates to me because I go through stuff sometimes not even people that are close to me know about I just smile and pretend as if everything its okay
"Beneath this mask dwells the real me in confusion, loneliness, and fear. But I don't dare tell you that.
I don't dare tell you that this is my mask."

  51. This poem is a strong deep verison of the "Minister's Black Veil". Because it states, " Long felt hurt makes my mask endure." In the the story of The Minister's Black Veil Mr.Hooper was rejected by a female because he would not remove his veil. At no point in time did she ever know or find out while he had on the veil. He'd rather be single, lonely, and depressed then open up to this person and explain why he had a black veil on. More evidence from the poem."I'm afraid that your glance will not be followed by acceptance and love. I'm afraid that you'll think less of me... that you"ll laugh and that your laugh would kill me." This relates to me by the secerts i hold with in me. The overall theme is that there is so much going on that a person had to build mental walls to protect themselves and keep going on with their lives and they finally meet someone they can open up to but it's to hard to do so they need help to do it.

  53. The poem relates to "we wear the mask",because both talk about how a person hides their face from the outer world and are afraid to show their true emotions. The message of the poem is that people wear the mask to hide their true emotions and wear the mask to show people emotions that they really don't feel."For I wear a thousand masks and none of them are really me",sometimes I wear a mask to fit in society

  54. This poem relates to "we wear the mask" because they showed different feelings to people than how they really feel inside. I think the overall message is the show that the meanest/happiest person is mainly the one that's really hurt inside. This poem relates to me because I'm that one goofy girl always trying to have a smile in my face, but its to hide my real feelings

  55. This poem relates to the pieces of literature that we read this six weeks because it shows how people wear masks to hide themselves and act as if they were in control of themselves. The poem speaks of how each person has the power over oneself even when they seem to believe different. This can relate to the real world because people may actually feel that way sometimes.

  56. This poem relates to the "Minister's Veil" and the "We wear the mask cause they show how they hide their feelings from others. This quote "The mask of angers easier to show then the mask of hurt" shows how this person is afraid due to the sin or sadness. Majority of people show there happy and proud side of their life. But the overall theme of this poem is that you will never know the true side of a person because they are hiding/ covering something up.You should be open to everybody at all times, many people can support you through your tough times. Be positive and keep your head up.

  58. From GeKhara Hurt
This poem relates to The Ministers Black Veil because both characters wear masks confusing people of who they really are. The overall message of this poem is masks are a cry out for attention , understanding attention so people can be happy with who they really are. I can relate to this poem when it says "such a glance is precisely my only salvation." because almost everyday I go out of my way to look good on the outside to feel good on the inside.

  59. To me this poem relates to "We Wear The Mask" because its explaining everything about wearing a mask and covering your true feelings. Both stories are basically identical to each other because of they both explain how they cover up true emotions with mask or cover ups like covering up how they truly feel with another emotion that's hard to tell how they really feel. To me this poem was saying read between the lines because yes I pretend to have nothing wrong with me but something really is, "the moment I act like I don't need you the least is the moment I need you the most." This poem relates to me because I myself tend to pretend that nothing is wrong with me but really deep down I have a lot of issues, "Don't be fooled by this mask that I wear." "For I wear a thousand masks and none of them are really me." These quotes definitely relates to me because a lot of people tend to think that I'm fine but truly I am not.

  63. The poem the "Minister's Veil" and the poem "We wear the mask both of the poem show how they deep down inside they hide their feelings and their emotions feelings from others. Such as this quote "For I wear a thousand masks and none of them are really me" shows the person is hiddding how they really are and is scared of letting people know who they really are. But however this poem is showing how a person can use a symbol to hide his or her true feelings and emotions by hiding behind their mask in my way of saying it knowone should hide their true self feeling or emotion because someday people might think that the person you once lied about was the real you but after all your the only one that knew it wasent you. The quote " I'm afraid that you'll think less of me...that you'll laugh and that your laugh would kill me". I use to have a friend that once told me he was afraid about what people thoughr about him that quote there relates to him in many ways because i remember one day when people would play jokes on him and he will get upset and he will start to walk away and say nothing to anyone. Thats just how i am but to me i dont care what people think feel or say.

  64. This poem is extremely powerful. Everyone can relate to this poem because, everyone at some point in life has hidden their true identity or emotions due to a fear of reactions "I'm afraid your glance will not be followed by acceptance and love. I'm afraid that you'll think less of me ... and that you'll laugh and that your laugh will kill me" proves that. I can relate to this poem because, I don't want or allow people to see my true emotions due to the fact I don't want my anger or sadness to be seen as a weakness. This poem relates to 'We Wear The Mask' because, in both poems they tell a story of someone hiding something and not wanting to express true feelings. The theme of this poem is everyone where's a mask. It depends on how well they are with removing the mask and showing their true emotions is what really matters.

This poem related to the literature “We Wear the Mask” because both poems talk about how people hide behind a mask so they won’t show how they really feel. “Don’t be fooled by the mask that I wear.”... This quote expresses how the person is scared to take off the mask they have on and show who they really are and how they truly feel. The overall message of this poem is that you will never know how a person really feels due to the mask they put on to cope with their problems. I can relate to this poem by saying that I wear a mask to hide what I truly feel. I don’t show how I really feel when I’m dealing with a something. I act as if it nothing and continue with my day.

  66. This specific poem relates to the last two passages me and my seventh period read in class titled "We Wear The Mask" and "The Minister's Black Veil" simply because of the meaning and purposes of the passages. Considering the fact that all three of them are mainly about one's emotional situations or their way's of hiding their emotions and problems. The authors uses the mask to illustrate how you're able to disguised your true emotions metaphorically, also physically. Not wanting to let others to be aware of your feelings at the moment, you could wear a mask to keep them out of your situations or keeping a plain face as a mask to cover up your problems and emotions. In order to relate the stories to my life; when im upset and doesn't want to be bothered, i use my room as my mask. Not an actual mask but it keeps me from showing how im feeling at the moment and i am able stay away from others around me who are judgmental and has assumptions about how i am feeling. In order to do so i just stay in my peaceful room.

  67. This poem relates to the ministers veil because they both show how people attempt to hide their true emotions from the rest of the world.the message is saying you shouldn't hide your feelings. When the author writes I'm afraid that your glance will not be followed by acceptance and love I'm afraid that you'll think less of me... that you'll laugh. Which mean she is afraid to show her true self. I think this story don't relate to me because I have never tried to hide my true self from anybody.

  70. This poem relates to the "Minister's Veil" and the "We wear the mask"
cause they all show how they hide their feelings and their emotions from others. This quote "don't be fooled by the face I wear " that people show fake faces to hide there emotions. But the overall of this poem is that you will never know the true side of a person. People don't like to show there emotions so they put on the mask. This poem relates to me because, some times I put on a mask to hide how I feel

  71. This poem relates to "We wear the mask" and the "Minister's black vail" because they are all hiding behind some sort of mask because they are afraid to show there true emotions and are afraid of what society would think of them. In the poem "Please hear what I am not saying" it quotes "Im afraid that your glance will not be followed by acceptance and love", which means that they are scared of what people think of them once they take the mask off and reveal the real them. I cam releate to this because I wear a mask which means I have certain things that I dont want people to know about and I dont say anything about it because I dont want to be judged. People should take off their masks and show who they really are and not care what people think about them.

  72. "Please Hear What Am I Not Saying" would relate to "We Wear The Mask" because they both talk about hiding behind a mask. In "We Wear The Mask" he states "but let the world dream otherwise, we wear the mask" and in this poem he states "When you see anger in this mask......thats not anger, that's hurt" both saying how people have this false thought of what the mask really symbolizes. This poems overall message tells how she is afraid to show her true self but would like too if she could without being judged. I relate to this poem everytime I'm in a relationship.

  73. This literature copares to The Minister's Black Veil. The poem Please Hear What I'm Saying describes that they wont show others who they truly are, "... I don't dare tell you this is my mask." While in the story The Minister's Black Veil Mr.Hooper remove the black veil to detect his face. The theme in the poem is saying that we are hiding ourselfs from others than to showing them who they truly are. "Dont be fooled by this mask I wear. For I wear thousand masks and none of themare really me." This quote from the poem relates to how I use to feel goi g to different places such as school or even being around family because my personality would change.

  74. The message that this poem is trying to portray is that although people would like to show true feelings and their true self, we are still not confident enough and so we need to hide under an imaginary "mask". This is shown in the poem when it states, "And yet I can never tell about the crying inside of me...of my greatest hurts...of my deepest
fears...my concerns.I can't tell you that because I am afraid.". This poem relates to "The Ministers Black Veil" because both selections speak about how people are trapped by their owe sins/feelings. Finally, this poem relates to me because even though I have friends that I trust, there will always be something that I am going to keep to myself, and so I also wear a "mask"

  75. This poem relates to We Wear the Mask because both poems talk about hiding their feelings, and not showing their real emotions as it says "Don't be fooled by the mask that I wear". By saying that, the author tries to say something like sometimes we fake a smile just to make people think that everything is alright. Also it can be because sometimes people think that their feelings can affect another person's day or moment. This poem is not related to me at all since I always express what I feel and my opinions toward others.

  76. In the poem the author speaks about the mask people see and judge. In "The Minister with the Black Veil" Hooper is judge by his congregation for his appearance without knowing the situation he is going through. The author of the poem also speaks about the truth lying beneath the mask worn to conceal the reality. He said not to be judgmental but instead be kind and show love. "He has changed himself into something awful... our parson has gone mad!", this indicates how people will judge before knowing the truth. Judgement should not be given by the appearance but by their personality because you might not know the true side of the life someone is living. I can relate to this the same way because there certain things I wouldn't tell anyone in order to prevent being judge meaning I wear a mask of my own.

The poem relates to the piece of literature we have read this six weeks by how the masks covers so much about the person behind it and the person always is hiding something they don't want nobody to judge. "I'm pretending that I am in command and that I need no one". The overall message is that th person that is wearing the masks is hiding so much feelings and emotions that he/she is pushing people away and believe they just need themselves. "It's the only thing that can liberate me from myself, from my own self-built prison... From the barriers that I have so painstakingly created. "Don't be fooled by this mask that I wear. For I wear a thousand mask and none of them are really me." This quote means that every person wears many mask and they hide who they really are and that none of the masks are true. The following quote in the poem relates to me, because I almost always don't show my true feelings. "It's the only thing that I can liberate me from myself, from my own self-built prison...from the barriers that I have so painstakingly created". A lot of people do not like to show their true emotions This is like a heartbreak, they act like they're not hurt but inside they really are. In The Peom it states, "Don't be fooled by me.
Don't be fooled by this mask that I wear.
For I wear a thousand masks and none of them are really me.

One might wear the mask ,i would to hide my true feelings , people will use anything againts you so why show your weakness ...

  85. This poem relates to The Minister of the Black veil because both characters use masks to cover their faces because they hid their emotions. They are afraid of what people will say and how they react towards them.In the poem "Please hear what I am not saying" it quotes "So I play my game. My desperate, pretending game with the facades of assurance from without and
that of a trembling little child from within.
And my life becomes a front", which means that they put up a front pretending to be another person instead of being true to themselves. I can relate to this because I wear a mask sometimes to hide my true feelings or hide what I don't want other people to know. Deep down I need to be true to who I am but sometimes I am afraid of what people might think about me. In the end I don't need to worry about what other people think about me. Because eventually we have to overcome removing our masks and revealing ourselves to the world.

  87. The poem "Please Hear What I am Not Saying" relates to "We Wear The Mask" and "The Ministers Black Veil" because all three poems talk about hiding their real selves behind a mask. Additionally in all three poems it shows some sort of hidden emotions which takes them to wear the mask. In "please Hear What I am Not saying" the author writes, "beneath this mask dwells the real me in confusion, loneliness and fear but I don't dare to tell you that." This helps the reader understand how the mask reflects a different person than the real one. I wear a mask that hides secrets emotions I want no one to know about me or see. This how o can relate to the poems personally.

"He has changed himself into something awful... our parson has gone mad!", this shows how the minister began being judge without anybody having any idea why he had the black veil on. The poem is trying to say how people are afraid to show others the truth because they fear being judge. I can relate to this as I also have things I wouldn't tell anyone fearing being judge and looked upon differently meaning I wear my own mask.

In the minister's black veil it talks about Mr.Hooper with a black veil covering his eye. that of a trembling little child from within." Here he is trying to hide his emotions just like the other character did, they feared what others thought. But at the end they see they are wrong and change for the better.

  91. This poem can relate to the story "The Black Veil" because the minister, Mr. Hooper, wears a black veil that covers his entire face. His parishioners believe that the reason he is wearing the black veil is because maybe he has a secret sin that he doesn't want anyone to know about. The poem, "Please Hear What I Am Not Saying", is similar to "The Black Veil" because in the poem, the author states how he wears many masks & that none of them are the real him. In the poem when Charles C. Finn says, "I'm afraid that your glance will not be followed by acceptance and love.", he is afraid that if he shows the real him, he will not be accepted by anyone. The two pieces of literature can relate because both characters are hiding their face to hide something that they are ashamed of. The overall message of the poem is that everyone is afraid to show who they really are. This can relate to me because i have some things that i do not want people to know about me cause they might not accept them.
