Cycles

Picking up chips and stacking wood,
Exactly as the old men did—
Picking up chips and stacking wood:
Is it just a vicious circle?
Wood for winter—
I’ll still be cold.
Some wine, two glasses—
I’ll still be cold…
How does this poem relate to the idea of one’s society impacting that individual?  Your response must include at least one example from A Lesson Before Dying and one example of your own personal experience.

  1. This poem relates to the idea that society finds its self indiffrent. It has become numb and unconciouse of the diffrent soroundings and anything done good or bad is seen with out an effect. Now in days it doesn't matter what you do and preparing for the future is ritual and unwanted. In a lesson before dying Jefferson is indiffrent and doesn't care about his sourounding because he's blinded by the situation he feels traped in.

  2. This poem relates to the idea of society impacting the individual by stating that every generation would be doing the same thing the past ones did. In a ALBD it states it when Grant has a flashback while looking at the boys chopping up wood which he did when he was in school. My own experience is how family gives up in school to work ,and soon they would fine out that it was a mistake like older relatives did too.

  3. Everyone is a product of their environment. This is because every individual is some how influenced by their personal surroundings. For example, several members in my family play instruments which in turn, is why I learned play multiple instruments. In A Lesson Before Dying Matthew Antoine has grown old and bitter because of all his years he spent working and chopping wood.

  4. Society does impact how a person ends up living their life a lot of the time. "Picking up chips and stacking wood, Exactly as the old men did-" is a quote from "A Lesson Before Dying" and the perfect example of how the tradition of manual labor was passed down from an old generation of men to a young generation of boys. Just as my decision to be in the cosmetology cluster may have been influenced by my mother completing Ogle's Beauty School. The only difference is that the young boys may not have chosen to follow in their ancestors' foot steps. Sometimes, society chooses your path for you, rather than influencing it.

  5. This poem shows that people in society are sometimes trapped in a cycle, doing what their elders once did. This happened to Grant and his students in a lesson before dying. Grant and his students ended up cutting wood like the people before them once did. I am also trapped in a cycle. I must study hard and go to college like my parents did.

  6. This poem relates to the idea of one's society impacting individual because society is a win/loose factor. In the journey of life there are choices. Some people choose to take the wrong path in life while other move on to success. Usually you will do one or the other with the exception of death. Most people choose the path that they think everyone would approve of. For instance , during 3rd period everyone decided to skip because we had a sub and I stayed in class because there was a choice to have a absence and receive a zero for the day or stay in class for a passing grade. Of course I chose to do what most of the class did not. In ALBD Grant's former teacher tells him he has chosen to stay in the quarter while others took the opportunity of leaving without coming back. By him staying a burden has been passed on to him because he's going to feel obligated to staying in the quarter teaching. Grant took the opposite of what others did.

  7. This poem relates to society because no matter what someone does things will always be the same. In A Lesson Before Dying Grant says "They are fifty years younger, maybe more, but doing the same thing those old me did who never attended school a day in their lives. Is it just a vicious circle? Am i doing anything?"

  8. The poem talks about a vicious cycle tha does not change. sociey influences the desicions we make with our lives. In A Lesson Before Dying Grant tries the same method over and over again of geting into Jefferson's head and changing the idea that he is hog an not a human. People have tried to influence my choices but i dont allow it to happen.

  9. Although an individual may follow the norm, and do what proper, considered, or accepted; what does this change? In A Lesson Before Dying Grant struggles on whether or not he should help Jefferson become a man before he dies. Yet, even after Grant gives Jefferson knowledge, therefore making him a man, he will still die. This is an example of this poem; it’s a visious cycle of Jefferson life. Grant follows what people assumes to be right and just, but even after he follows their decision and orders – the situation stays the same.

  10. Ones society can impact them in the sense that if a person sees older people or people they look up to doing something they follow those examples. In A Lesson Before Dying the children outside the church stacking wood act the exact same as the adults that had no education did. I have personally seen this cycle. An example is kids I grew up with had parents in prison and ended up going to prison. Who's to say that their children won't end up in prison?

  11. Many times people act as followers in which society depends on that only individual for many things like in ALBD many people depended on Grant as there teacher and a person to follow.

  12. The poem above relates to the idea of society impacting that of the individual by making the exact same routine a habit. Perhaps that routine isn't very enjoyed by the individual. This poem certainly has a relationship with "A Lesson Before Dying" regarding Grant Wiggins. Grant Wiggins feels stucked in the same atrocious cycle of him being the only hope for their town. He feels consumed by the repetitious cycle of him being the teacher and seeing the same things over and over. He wonders if his students will end up as his old friends from when he was a kid himself. Additionally, to my prior experience I can also relate to this poem by seeing myself get older over the years. By this i mean that every year we getting older we're suppose to be maturing while seeing what life has in store for us. I can remember back when I was a little girl I wished to be older and see how it felt to make my own decisions, but now i think about it and I really wish I could go back and take advantage of my childhood a little better.

  13. This poem relates to the idea of ones society impacting that individual because most of the times, us as humans are to stubborn to let a change happen since we are to trapped in what we believe. Just as in "A Lesson Before Dying" , Jefferson doesn't have any hope or try to put in effort for a change while he's in jail . He constantly keeps reminding him self that he is a hog which leads him to not believe anything what other. He also refuses to make a change with hurting the ones that love him.

  14. In today's society nothing anyone does is original it is all just a perception of mind to a whole. What everyone does is just a cycle of one another. That is why a movement made in society is such an influence on an individual. Everything in the world is just a giant relapse. In "A Lesson Befor Dying" Grant is trying his best to educate the kids in the quarter but wonders if hes doing enough for them when he sees them outside chopping wood and remembers thats how his friends from when he was a kid would act and all his friend have ended up in a bad situation. He wonders if it just going to be repeated. A personal experience is when i moved schools to get a better education but it seems like the experience hasn't changed. It seems its the same in all DISD schools. I wonder if society will change so that future kids can have a better education or if its going to be a repeating cycle.

  15. This poem relates to the idea of one's society impacting that individual is that one should always pick her/him self up when something always goes wrong, don't never give up on something. In a "Lesson Before Dying",Grant tries to complete his mission in making sure Jefferson knows he is a man before he is executed,he won't give up on that even though he feel he should but he doesn't. My own personal experience well this girl who didn't like me would always tell me hurtful words that made me feel down but one day I had the guts to stand for myself. And she stop telling me hurtful words because I standed up for myself.

  16. This is saying that no matter what we do to try to change something that has been done for a long time.It will always end up were it was.
